In Norse mythology, Loki is punished for killing Balder.
They bind him over three sharp rocks, and hang a snake above him that drops poison on him. His wife is sitting next to him and catches the venom in a bowl, but every once and then, she has to empty it. And then drops fall on Loki.
After the Avengers Loki would be punished, but Thor is taking Loki's place.
Ofcourse, Loki doesn't change, and still takes over Midgard. 
So now Thor is here, with Loki paying him a visit to tell him he has taken over earth.
